The above photos show a salmon sculpture in progress. Many
hours of meticulous work go into each design. Tom starts
with a piece of dead wood or a "blow down" that he finds and
then decides whether to create a salmon or a whale-tail. He
first uses a chainsaw to cut away a lot of the excess wood. He
then uses angle grinders with cutting attachments to get
even more excess wood out of the way. Once the basic design
starts to emerge, Tom uses rasps, files, sandpaper, and lots of
elbow grease. All of his designs are finished to a smooth
surface. The base is usually left in a semi-rough state to
show off the natural beauty of the wood.

Picture above: This relief carving
was done on a slab found in a tree
elbow. The original bark is still
intact and a light stain enhances
the wood grains which also
enhance the characteristics of the
salmon. (SOLD)
